MANNING

Posted: September 10th, 2012

James Neil Manning was born on November 28, 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Alec and Maxine Manning. He moved to Toronto when he was 3 years old. He overcame physical disability and major surgery on his spine. Jim thrived in intellectual pursuits like chess and magic. In high school, he became a cadet and was an accomplished sailor, saving many lives on Lake Ontario during his tenure. While Jim held many jobs in his youth, it was while working for an insurance company that he received an offer to be sent to University to learn this newfangled machine – the computer. He started with DAT tapes and by the end of his career, he was managing a government web page and developing major software that impacts every person in Ontario to this day. During this time, Jim met the love of his life, Muriel McCaa, and she lead him on a merry chase. He finally caught her and they were married on June 1, 1968. They bought a house and got a dog and things settled down until August 1977 when they had their daughter, Deborah Jean Manning. In September of 1999, they moved to Medicine Hat and made friends and enjoyed a leisurely retirement. Through his 76 years, Jim kept everything together and navigated the world with a sharp intellect and keen sense of observation and most notably, a dry wit that snuck up on you when you least expected it. On September 3, 2012, Jim passed away. He will be missed by many people. Jim loved animals and the family would like to ask for donations to the S.P.C.A. – 55 Southwest Drive SW, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8E8, in lieu of flowers.
