SZABO Maria

MARIA SZABO, beloved wife of Peter Szabo Sr. of Lethbridge, passed away with her family by her side, at the Legacy Lodge in Lethbridge on Tuesday, March 19th, 2013 at the age of 84 years.
She is the loving mother to Peter (Christina) and a very proud grandmother of Madeline, Gabriella, Elizabeth and John. Maria was predeceased by her parents Janos and Roszalia Hanusi, brother Joseph Hanusi and sister Anne Barcu.
Maria was born in Nyircsaholy Szabolcs Szatmar Megye in Hungary. She immigrated to Canada from Hungary in 1964 and settled with her parents in the Sunnyside area. Through mutual friends she was introduced to Peter Szabo and they married in 1967. After living one year in Milk River with Steve and Helen Balog and family, Peter and Maria bought farmland back in Sunnyside. They grew sugar beets, wheat, oats and Maria had a beautiful garden. They raised chickens and cattle and Maria was never afraid of hard work, doing most everything by hand. They lived on the farm until 2006 when they moved to Lethbridge.
Maria was a Roman Catholic and was devoted to praying for her family. She never missed a Sunday in church and was always present in the last pew while she was healthy. Her faith is the foundation of our family. Maria especially enjoyed cooking and made delicious Hungarian noodles, cabbage rolls and pastries, which will be especially missed. Maria loved sports and hockey, and her favorite team, the Calgary Flames. There were many nights spent in front of the TV cheering on the home team. Maria was proud of her grandson playing the sport she loved so much and never missed the chance to ask him how many goals he had scored. She was very interested in all of the activities of her grandchildren and always kept up on their latest triumphs. They were her greatest joy.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sommerfeldt and all the staff at Legacy Lodge, especially Marina, Marilyn, Michele, Sue and many others too numerous to mention. It was not always easy, but she truly appreciated all the care you provided to her.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Prayer Service at ST. BASIL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604-13th Street North, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Frank Peta officiating.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. BASIL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604-13th Street North, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, March 22, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Roque Pereira, Celebrant.
Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
