COLEMAN Verna
Posted: May 14th, 2013On May 6, 2013, VERNA FLORENCE COLEMAN completed 91 years on this earth, abandoned her body and entered into her eternal home with her Saviour Jesus Christ.
Everything she owned, she left behind, including her two daughters, Deb Orr of Lethbridge, Gail Olbricht (Larry) of Arizona and their two grown sons; two sisters, Jean Dundas of Claresholm and Vina Panchuk of Regina; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In October 1944 she married Leo Shelley Coleman of Magrath. They were living in Germany, serving in the RCAF during the Cold War when she was widowed at age 36 in September 1957, necessitating a return to Canada. She chose to settle in Lethbridge and courageously ventured into the workforce because raising her two girls was now on her shoulders. After a couple of years of non-fulfilling work she successfully applied to Bill Kergan to be a city social worker, from which she retired at age 60, on doctor’s orders.
Her retirement years were busy with much Bible study and a passion to serve her Lord, reading, loving her dogs and friends, and stubbornly maintaining her house and yard long after she safely could. Well into her 80’s she agreed to go into a seniors’ care facility, but dearly missed her home, car and independence. As old age has a way of doing, besides all her many illnesses, she lost her vision (a sharp blow for a voracious reader) and her ability to walk (broken hips do that) making her last 3 to 4 years extra challenging. But her faith, sense of humour, and feisty stubbornness were her daily fuel and she kept chugging along, challenging life and winning friends.
As her body and mind failed, she, family and friends desired her release and it was granted.
“You are now free, Mum, and we’re thrilled! We miss you but know it’s not forever.” Much love from Deb and Gail.
As Mom requested, there will be no public service.
