1919 ~ 2013

Mrs. Katharina (Katie) Laubenstein, beloved wife of the late Mr. Friedrich Laubenstein, was called home to the Lord on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the age of 93 years.  Born in Furstenfeld, Rumania on December 23, 1919.  Katie was predeceased by husband, Fred in 2004, a son, Adolf  2000 and sister-in-law, Lena in 2012.  She is survived by sons, Rudolf (Rose) Laubenstein of Redcliff, Gunther (Diane) Laubenstein of Burdett, and daughter-in-law, Lorene (Adolf deceased) Ross.  10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Rudolf Laubenstein and families.  Married to Friedrich Laubenstein  on Feb. 28, 1941. Katie immigrated to Canada in May of 1953 with her husband and 3 sons.  They spent the first 6 years in the Lethbridge / Taber area working in the sugar beet industry.  In 1959 her family moved to Medicine Hat where they spent the rest of her time, with a short sojourn to Edmonton and then back to Medicine Hat. Katie (Oma) was known to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, for her specialty meals – strudel, knephle, kuchen, borsht, rotte gritze, chickens feet, mumileke and many, many more that will be missed. (Some not so much) Some of those recipes will be gone forever, because  Oma didn’t write them down. She was well known for her hospitality, and anyone and everyone felt welcome in her home.  She spent the first few years in Medicine Hat working at the Greenhouses, but most of her working life was as a domestic for various well known families in Medicine Hat.  Oma spent the last few years of her life in the Sunnyside care facility where she also said goodbye to her husband of 63 years. She was a great example to us her family as to what  a Christian life should be lived like. Though  she will be greatly missed, we know that she has gotten the desire of her heart and has gone home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ.  The Funeral Service will be held at the Wuerfel Auditorium, South Country Village, 1720 Bell Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Bob Findley officiating.  Private interment will take place prior to the service at the Burdett Cemetery.  (Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.cooksouthland.com) Memorial donations in Katie’s name may be made directly to the Gideons International In Canada, c/o 177, 1415 – 28 Street S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8P9 or by visiting  www.gideons.ca
