JOYCE JOY CAROLINE COMBER

1949 – 2013 With great sadness the Comber and Aman families announce that Joy Comber passed away peacefully at St.

Michael’s Hospital on September 19, 2013 after a valiant nine month battle with cancer. She is survived by Peter Comber, her adoring husband of 30 years, and her children in spirit Tricia and Laird (Beverley) Comber and her grand-daughter Lucy Comber, her sister Betty Sauter of Medicine Hat, her three brothers, Norman Aman of Calgary, Ray (Darlene) Aman of Medicine Hat and Wes (Peggy) Aman of Medicine Hat, her sister in-law Elaine (brother Harvey pre-deceased) Aman of Medicine Hat as well as 10 nieces and nephews including, Tannis (David) Schwarz, Kent Aman, Landon Aman, Craig (Kristi) Sauter, Troy (Natalie) Sauter, Conway Sauter, Genevieve (Derek) Taylor, Chris (Courtenay) Aman, Elisa (Dustin) Giesbrecht, Thomas (Kari) Aman and 19 great nieces and nephews Joy was born on June 4, 1949 in Irvine, Alberta a small ranching community east of Medicine Hat and moved from the ranch to Calgary in 1968 and then to Toronto in 1985 following her marriage to Peter. In Calgary she began a 20 year career as a teacher of business administration initially at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary and later at Albert Campbell Collegiate in Toronto. Joy was both inspired and inspiring as a teacher and highly respected by her pupils and fellow teachers. Joy, affectionately called “Joyful” was well named. With her engaging smile and sunny disposition she had a unique ability to impart an element of joy into the lives of all who came into her world. Her zest for life was well known. She loved the game of golf, was an avid reader and keen bridge player, superb cook and an enthusiastic participant in many activities. The cottage at Lake of Bays was her favourite place in the world and favourite venue for hosting many memorable dinners and parties over the years. Over the last 3 years the Oaks community at Sarasota Florida became an important part of her life with Peter where she expanded her interests and developed many new friends. Another passion of Joy’s was travel. She and her husband made many trips including several to England, France and Italy. She relished her annual excursion to New York City with Peter. Above all, Joy loved her family and was a pillar of strength to her husband and Tricia and Laird and her family in the West. By far the best friend anyone could have Joyful was warm and caring, optimistic and supportive and always saw the good in people. Her energy, optimism and love of life will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the caring medical and nursing staff at the intensive and palliative care units at Princess Margaret and St. Michael’s Hospitals. Friends may call at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. West (2 stop lights west of YongeSt.), Toronto on Tuesday September 24th from 6-8 pm. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for family and friends will be held at CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK, 1570 Yonge St. (at Heath St. W.) on Wednesday at 11 a.m. following which a reception will be held at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the St. Michael’s Hospital palliative care unit.
