JOSEPH JOHN STROH

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Stroh, beloved husband of Hazel Stroh, on October 9, 2013 at the age of 82 years.  In addition to his loving wife, Joseph is survived by his children; Robert (Margaret), Barbara (Dale) Fuglerud, Ira (Peggy), Douglas (Cheryl), Anita (David) Leahy, Laura (Mike) Senger, John (Holly), Thomas (Tanis), David (Lisa Kowalchuk); 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by one brother, Anthony (Elaine) and one sister, Clara Ann (Don) St. Amand as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and extended family.  He was predeceased by his parents, John and Magdalena.  Joseph was born on the family farm near Mendham, Sk. on August 25, 1931.  He graduated from Teachers’ College in Moose Jaw in 1951 and began his teaching career in Viceroy, Sk.  He married the love of his life, Hazel Tendler, on October 5, 1956 in Horizon, Sk.  His career took him from Viceroy to Crane Valley, Sk. and then to McCoy High School in Medicine Hat where he retired in 1987.  In his younger years, Joe was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing, coaching and officiating numerous sports including baseball, hockey, curling, football and badminton.   Joe was honoured as a life member of the Medicine Hat Curling Club.   He was also very active in various community organizations including the Knights of Columbus and served on the Board of the Credit Union.  His greatest joy was his family.  Joe loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and cherished the weekly family suppers.  We love you and we’ll miss you Dad (Grandpa)!  Those wishing to pay their respects may do so starting one hour prior to Vigil Prayers which will be recited at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Monday, October 14, 2013, at 7:00 P.M.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 238 – 2 Avenue N.E., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at 10:30 A.M. with Reverend Father Alphonse Narisetty celebrant.  Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.  (Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.cooksouthland.com)  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 102 Crestwood Square One, 1865 Dunmore Road S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 1Z8;  the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102, 73 – 7 Street S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 1J2 or to the Medicine Hat Catholic Education Foundation to establish a memorial scholarship in Joe’s name.  Honoured to serve the family is COOK SOUTHLAND Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4V4.

    I am so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. I was fortunate to have Mr. Stroh as a teacher at McCoy and I have many fond memories of his German classes. My deepest sympathies to the family.
