It is with broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of THOMAS C. BUTLER, of Coutts, with his loving devoted wife by his side at Chinook Regional Hospital, Lethbridge, on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the age of 74 years.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Carlyn Ann (McLaggan); son Sean (Shelly) and daughters Lisa (Robert) and Annie (Bryan); and his adored grandchildren: Nash, Preston, Jett, Teagan and Scarlett (Sean & Shelly); Jake, Siranda and Olivia (Lisa & Robert); Jenna, Kohl, and Nickolas (Bryan); his immediate family, Mary Butler, Susan and Jack Butler and Michael Butler; as well as sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Charlie & Cecilia Butler.
Tom was born March 28, 1945 in Newcastle NB, his greatest love and devotion was to his cherished family and especially his grandchildren. As a young lad, Tom liked to play hockey and help out on the family farm. He moved to Toronto as a young man but returned to the Miramichi to win the heart of Carlie McLaggan in a poker game. The pair moved out west, tying the knot in New Westminster BC. They moved around Alberta a lot before finally settling in the Village of Coutts with their three children.
Tom will forever be remembered as an active member of his community he loved, the Village of Coutts and would go on to build many of the houses and businesses in town. He was proud of the many parks and improvements he made to the Village (Spray Park, Water Project, Border gate/walkway, Beautification Project). As Mayor of Coutts (2008-2019), he took pride in his community and was proud to serve its citizens. One of his proudest accomplishments was his contribution to the Prairie Rose Lodge.
Tom worked as a contractor and long haul truck driver, his true passions were politics and golf, he enjoyed volunteering for the PC Party of Alberta serving as President of the Taber-Warner PC Party Constituency for two terms.
Tom’s family is grateful to the Coutts Fire and Rescue and the staff of the Chinook Regional Hospital for their care and compassion. A special thank you to Dr. Krog and the medical staff at the Milk River Heath Centre.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, Hwy 4 – 345 – 3 St. W, Coutts, AB, on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 from 3:00 P.M to 5:00 P.M., with Reverend Marion Martin officiating. Luncheon to follow at the Coutts Civic Centre.
