WINIFRED (FREDDIE) OLSEN DAHL died April 4, 2020 at the age of 84. Freddie was born on May 2, 1935 in Fountain Green, Utah to Ercel Allred Olsen and Homer Christian Olsen. Freddie is survived by her brother, Steven Thomas Olsen of San Francisco, CA. She is predeceased by her sister Marilyn Magee and brother Homer Olsen Jr. Freddie grew up in Monroe, Utah, where she attended South Sevier High School. She met her husband of 58 years, David Costley Dahl on a blind date while attending Brigham Young University in Fox Hall residence. Freddie married David on May 26, 1955, in the Manti Utah temple. David predeceased Freddie on November 7, 2013. David and Freddie moved to Raymond, Alberta, and eventually to Calgary, much to her mother’s sadness, and Freddie began her new life in a “foreign” land. Freddie was a Utah girl and very proud of her heritage; she was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers in Alberta. The subsequent family trips to Utah every summer were anticipated, cherished and wonderful.

Freddie served her community and was involved in the Benny the Bookworm book drives in Calgary; she was a docent for the Utah Symphony; and taught piano for many years. She loved music and was always composing songs for her children and others to sing for special occasions. She had a strong spiritual connection and was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held several callings and served as Stake Relief Society President. Freddie was a devoted mother, beloved grandmother and loved her family and friends. She was kind, gracious and compassionate. Freddie enjoyed sewing, preserving fruits and vegetables, and creating beautiful dried flower arrangements. Her signature baked bread was renowned and made the best toast. In her later years she took up oil painting and the beauty she saw in the world lives on through her art. Freddie is survived by her four children, Cynthia Mitchell, Rosemarie (Erik) Horne, Trish (Doug) Hatch and Dan (Mary) Dahl. She has 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Freddie Dahl Scholarship Fund. Funds will be given annually through the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Edmonton Branch to the piano student receiving the highest mark in Level 8 piano in the Edmonton Region. A private graveside service will be held in Raymond April 9, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. In the fall, when travel permits, a memorial service will be held for family and friends.
