1940 ~ EVELYN BARNES ~ 2020

Posted: April 30th, 2020

Evelyn Mabel Barnes of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Ian Barnes, passed away on Sunday, April 26th, 2020 at the age of 79 years. Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory her son, Darcy (Patricia) Barnes; grandchildren, Derek (Tanya) Barnes, Brandi Harvey (Cory Wesson), and Rob (Kim) Pittman; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Jaden, William, Owen and Wesley; sister, Linda (John) Mackintosh; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband of more that 40 years, Ian; parents, John “Jack” and Lea Pogmore; great-grandson, Steven Kroeger; and sister, Trudy Powell. Evelyn was born on June 11th, 1940 in Edmonton, AB. Her family moved to Calgary and she attended school there and then she got her first job working for AGT. After marrying Ian, Evelyn spent the next 46 years on the farm with her husband and their son, learning to drive tractor, haul grain, and being a helpmate. She enjoyed all the clubs that she was in, Community Club, Hall Board, the United Church, and held several Board positions over the years. She was especially proud of the two history books that she helped complete for the Bindloss Community as well as a book for the school. Evelyn’s health began to decline in January 2001 and she was told that she would require a liver transplant. She was very grateful to receive that transplant a short time after. When she celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary with Ian they requested donations to the Southern Alberta Transplant Program and to Medic-Air. They successfully raised $2700.00. After her retirement and Ian’s passing, Evelyn filled her days with family, volunteering at the Chinook Village Cornerstore and crocheting items to donate to various charities. She made a lot of very good friends and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Evelyn has kindly asked, “If you have it in your hearts sign your donor card and help save lives. Because someone did, I have had 19 years added onto my life.” Her family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Chinook Village for their friendship, kindness and support throughout the years. Also, a special thank you to the home care team for their special care. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Evelyn’s memory can be made to Canadian Liver Foundation, Suite #309, 1010 – 1st Avenue NE, Calgary, AB T2E 7W7 or to the Alberta Heart & Stroke Foundation, 200, 119 – 14th Street NW, Calgary, AB T1A 7L5.
