Posted: August 23rd, 2021

Mr. Lavern Krauss of Brooks, Alberta beloved husband of Shirley, passed away in Brooks on Wednesday, August 18th, 2021 at the age of 81 years. Lavern was born in Irvine, Alberta on February 22nd, 1940 to Jacob and Bertha Krauss. He married Shirley Sackman in Medicine Hat on October 27th, 1961. Lavern had odd jobs in the Medicine Hat area and later moved to Lawrence Good’s Ranch south of Irvine. In 1968, Lavern and his family moved to the Beierbach Ranch south of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. Later in the spring of 1973, Lavern and Shirley moved back to Alberta, to Seven Persons, and purchased a cattle feedlot. Finally, Lavern and Shirley settled in Brooks in 1982. Lavern was employed at Lakeside Feedlot as a cattle Penrider and later worked at Lakeside Packers as a Cattle Receiver. Lavern retired at age 65, however, could not find purpose so he picked up seasonal employment at Lakeside Fertilizer until his full retirement at age 72. He enjoyed visits with ranchers and farmers when delivering fertilizer products in Brooks and area. During Lavern’s early years he competed in rodeos and enjoyed team roping (he even lost part of one thumb in the process). He enjoyed training horses, continuing to do so into his late 60s. Later in life he took up golf as a hobby. Lavern enjoyed animals and found companionship with his granddaughter’s dog, Poppy. He was a hockey enthusiast for many years, especially an avid Brooks Bandits fan, holding season tickets. Over the years, Lavern belonged to the Brooks 55 Club, Brooks Bowling and the Elkwater Roping Club. He will be best remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Pam Lehr; two sons, Greg (Laura) and Wade; 5 grandchildren, Jenna Lehr (Al Sahin), Cale, Courtney, Hannah and Eva; sister, Shirley Volk and sister-in-law, Gloria Krauss. Lavern is predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Bertha Krauss; brother, Ken and his wife, Diane; and twin brother, Lorne. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 24th at 2:00 PM from Smith Memorial Chapel, Brooks. Rev. John Theiss officiating. In memory of Lavern, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Box 2211, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 4K7.
