1936 – 2021

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Elmer “Al” Watterud, beloved husband of Lil Watterud. He passed away peacefully with Lil by his side on August 26, 2021 at the age of 84 years.

Al was born on the family farm in the Kelvington, Saskatchewan area on September 6, 1936. He grew up in Kelvington, spending many hours playing hockey and other sports. In 1956 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. After leaving the Air Force, he moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he met Lil on a blind date. They were married on June 12, 1963 and Al joined the Alberta Liquor Control Board that year. They welcomed their two daughters, Sheri and Janice, into the family while in Edmonton. In 1974, Al assumed the Manager position of the Bow Island Liquor Store and stayed until his retirement in 1993 after 30 years of dedicated service. During their many years in Bow Island, Al was involved in numerous community activities including slo-pitch, golf, curling and the Elks and Legion Clubs. His fondest memories of that time were raising his family and the good times spent with the many friends they made there. Al was known for his great sense of humor, quick wit and always had a joke at hand. The best part of his workdays were the customers he got to know and especially the time spent with the daily coffee group. In 2008, Al and Lil relocated to Medicine Hat. They enjoyed the ‘small town’ feel of the city getting to know the neighbors in Horizon Village, participating in the many activities there and making some special friends. Due to Al’s declining health, he and Lil relocated to Lethbridge in April 2020 to be closer to family.

Besides Lil, his loving wife of 38 years, Al is survived by his daughters Sheri (Dwight) Kurtz and Janice (Mark) Klatt, grandchildren Connor, Kiara (Ben), Braden (Kortney), Logan (Klynt), Carson (Tyrah), great grandsons Kashton, Bennett and Madden, great granddaughters Joey and Macy, brother Ernest (Ethel) Watterud and sisters, Lorraine (Bob) Colby and Bernice Brownlee, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his sister Clarice Van Der Meulen.

A Funeral Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

In lieu of flowers please give your loved ones a hug and cherish your times together.
