Donald “Don” Young

1947 – 2021

Donald “Don” Young of Lethbridge, Alberta, beloved husband of Hazel Mitchell, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2021 at the age of 74 years.

Don was raised on the family farm in Millet, Alberta. He took an early interest in agriculture and pursued a degree at the University of Alberta to become an Agrologist. His 36-year career with Alberta Agriculture took him all over Alberta and beyond – from his beginnings in Leduc to his retirement in Lethbridge. He also delivered agricultural training courses in Ukraine and China.

Don was a very kind, loving and generous man – giving his time to family, friends and special causes. He was an avid supporter of the communities he lived in and the organizations with which he worked. Whether it was with the Agricultural Institute of Canada and the Canadian Society of Extension or with the Lethbridge and District Exhibition and the University Lethbridge board of governors, he worked hard on many projects to the betterment of the community.

Don was adventurous and loved sports, music, wine, photography and travelling. He was a lifelong member of the Alberta Amputee Association where he provided support to other amputees. He always loved a good joke too – the punnier the better. Hazel and Don were able to spend their retirement golfing and skiing and travelling to Australia, Europe and the Galapagos Islands/Peru.

Don will be forever remembered by his loving wife Hazel Mitchell; daughter Karlé (Cory) Green and their two sons Jasper and Lionel. He is also survived by two sisters and brother: Karen Young (Magnus Magnusson), Christine Richards (Barry), Bruce Young (Kathy) and brother-in-law Jim Mitchell (Annie). As well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Don was predeceased by his parents Robert and Alice Young of Millet, AB.

A Service and Celebration of Life will be held in the spring when there will hopefully be a chance to gather in greater numbers to celebrate Don.

Flowers are gratefully declined.
