Alf was born in Lethbridge on June 27,1933. His family moved to a lakefront acreage on Kootenay Lake at Nelson B.C. when he was young, and he developed a love of fishing and boating there. They moved back to Lethbridge in his teens, and he graduated from LCI. In 1956 he married Kay Peterson, and they had five children. Alf was a great and generous dad, always thinking of his family first. Summer family vacations were a highlight of every year. He worked as a communications electrician for AGT/Telus in Lethbridge, retiring in 1991. In March 1994 Kay passed away suddenly, ending their brief but happy time as retirees. He married LaRene Steed in June 1995 and they moved to Magrath. He enjoyed good times with her and her family prior to her passing in 2018.
Along with fishing Alf enjoyed gardening, wood carving, and puttering in his garage. He was the ultimate handyman, eager to tackle any project. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spending many years serving in the Cardston Temple and serving a mission in California with LaRene.
