DARRYL HANNAY 1943 ~ 2022
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Darryl Dale Hannay. Nearly 80, Darryl lived a quiet and simple life. As a younger man he climbed poles for Manitoba Hydro and enjoyed playing and watching sports. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, he was the eldest son of Melvin and Elsie Hannay. Later in life, with his own children, Darryl would walk his kids from the little red brick house he grew up in, to the Velvet Dip just up the street for a chocolate-covered frozen banana. Darryl married Carol Drimes on March 25, 1967. Darryl and Carol had many friends that remained close with them until Darryl’s recent passing. Darryl’s job with Manitoba Hydro meant many moves and his young family went with him. Lisa, Darryn and Shannon were all chosen by their mom and dad, and we have “fond” memories of rides in the country when we lived in The Pas, Manitoba. To be honest, these car rides were not always very much fun and the three of us often fought in the back seat of our (first) green station wagon and then our (second) red, wood-paneled station wagon. One ride in particular, Lisa and Darryn were let out a few blocks from home and told to walk home. Of course, Dad drove slowly so we just followed along, likely kicking each other as we walked home. Darryl, Carol and their three kids went on many trips as a young family and almost always went to Winnipeg for Christmas. We have fond memories of traveling on Via rail and sleeping in the bunks and seeing the mountains of snow along the tracks. We had a little tent trailer that we used for camping in the summer, then a larger pull trailer and eventually Dad and Mom got a fifth wheel. He did enjoy camping and would often travel to Spruce Sands and stay with Dave and Gerry. Once all the kids were older, Dad and Mom started traveling more going to Cuba, Quebec and New Orleans. Darryl worked for the City of Medicine Hat electrical department until his retirement and also worked for a while as a Justice of the Peace in the evenings and weekends. Often in the evenings he and Carol would go for rides looking for burned-out streetlights. He had a sound worth ethic and was always at work early to make coffee for his staff. This is a quality that his oldest daughter Lisa has carried throughout her career. In Medicine Hat Darryl and Carol made fast and lifelong friends with the Skrabas and the Johnsons who lived on College Drive and welcomed the Hannay family when we moved to The Hat from The Pas. Many nights of cards and sometimes homemade Chinese food or fresh homemade pasta courtesy of John and Elaine were enjoyed by the three families. After the passing of his wife Carol, Darryl met Pat Roloff, and they married in 2010, celebrating over 20 years of partnership. Darryl and Pat continued to have adventures, spending time as Snowbirds down south until Darryl’s health began failing making the journey difficult. Darryl and Pat loved Las Vegas and in recent years even cajoled Shannon and Tyson to holiday with them. Dad did like casinos, but we never had to worry about him losing money because as Pat has said, “your dad would turn a dollar over twice before spending it”. Darryl was frugal to be sure but could also be generous with family and friends in need. A fond memory is Dad’s great purchase of his hockey puck runners for a dollar from Progressive on 3rd Street. In hindsight, considering how hockey has changed, these runners would probably be worth something now! Darryl lost his battle with cancer on November 28, 2022. He is loved and survived by his loving wife, Pat and her daughters, Julie (Allen)and their son, Austin and Elizabeth (Doug). He will be cherished forever by his children, Lisa, Darryn and Shannon (Tyson). Papa will be remembered by his grandchildren Taylor, Brayden, Tavia. He is also survived by his brother, Gaye (Elaine) and his two nephews, Ryan and Shaun. Darryl was predeceased by his wife, Carol (2001); dad, Melvin (1974); mom, Elsie (2004); father-in-law, Philip; mother-in-law, Betty; brother-in-law and good friend, Ed and sister-in-law, Gerry. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please be generous to the charity of your choice. Adopt a family in need over the Christmas season, donate to Carmel Hospice but most of all, be kind. Darryl was kind and liked everyone. The family thanks the care team at St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged, particularly the nursing staff at Carmel Hospice. Our memories of our loved ones once they have passed, can allow grief to be a warm blanket if these memories are good and loving and true.
