DONALD PHILLIPS May 15, 1941 ~ October 24, 2023
Donald ‘Don’ Henry Phillips, beloved husband of the late Pat Phillips, passed away in Medicine Hat with family at his bedside following a brief illness on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the age of 82 years. Don leaves to cherish his memory: three sons, Brad (Leila), Jeff (Boerny) and Don Jr. (Lisa); three grandchildren, Kelsey (Joel) Wagner, Alexander Phillips and Anthony Phillips; his very special great-granddaughter, Madeline Wagner as well as numerous other extended family including daughter-in-law, Laverne Phillips. He was predeceased by his honourary grandchild, Mitchell Burton. Don was born and raised in the Trail, B.C. area. He proudly served in the R.C.A.F. from 1960 – 1994, retiring in Medicine Hat. During retirement, Don was very involved and donated much of his time to the Royal Canadian Legion, Robertson Memorial Branch #17 as well as the Lions Club of Medicine Hat. Don’s strong sense of duty for his family and for his country will be forever remembered by all who knew him. A Celebration of Don’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on November 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Private Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery with a time of fellowship thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. Don’s celebration will be live streamed. Those who cannot attend but wish to experience his celebration may visit the Cook Southland website and select the View Broadcast button on the homepage at service time. Family wish to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of 4 West at the Hospital for the wonderful care Don received while there. My condolences to the family your Dad ,Grandfather and Great Grandfather was a very special person and I will miss him very much with the many coffees and conversations we had together over the years
Such sad news – a life well lived but far too short.
Don and I were first cousins – my mother, Juanita and Don’s mother, Bea (Effie) were sisters.
My fondest memory is of visits to his childhood home in BC. We’d pick peaches and apples, play hide and seek and be scared of the earwigs. Don was always laughing.
Although he was Mom’s ‘only’ nephew, from the Blackburn side of the family, he was her favourite. She loved hearing from him and Pat about their travels and their jobs. There were many fond memories from a trip Mom and Dad made to Germany, where Don was stationed. They were welcomed with open arms and Don and Pat toured them around like royalty. Such fun.
Don & Pat came to visit Mom, just before her passing, in Moncton NB in 2009. He was full of life and all smiles. She was so happy to see him and you could tell she loved him dearly. That was the last time we saw each other.
Time and distance meant Don and I lost touch however he was in my thoughts. Now, after his passing, we will keep you and yours in our thoughts and prayers. So sorry for your loss.
