MARGARET PAYNE

MARGARET PAYNE 1928 ~ 2023 Margaret Mary Payne of Medicine Hat passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at the age of 95years, beloved wife of the late Cyril Payne. She will be lovingly remembered by her two sons, Shawn Payne and Charles Payne; daughter in-law Gloria Roth, and grandchildren, Shawn and Rachel. Margaret is also survived by her sisters, Norah Hyland and Mary Timmons in England. Along with her husband Cy, she was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Terry, Jimmy, and Gerard, and her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Rice.
Margaret was a gentle soul, a steadfast friend, a loving mother, wife, and nurse. Margaret was born in Liverpool England to James and Elizabeth Clarke. She was the eldest of seven children and spent her early years in Liverpool. During the second world war, she and three of her siblings were evacuated to the country side, living in the small village of Wybunbury Cheshire with Jane and Alfred “Ernie” Foden, whom she thereafter always referred to as her aunt and uncle.
After the war, Margaret trained as a nurse at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool. Her nursing career took her around the world, working for several years in Australia, and then in Canada. It was while working at the Baker Memorial Sanatorium in Calgary that she met a patient, Cyril Payne, whom she would marry. Marg and Cy started their married life in Calgary, and over the next two decades would raise two boys, living in Calgary, Red Deer, and Medicine Hat.
Cremation has been entrusted to the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE. She will be laid to rest with her husband at a private family interment at the Hillside Cemetery. To leave a message of condolence you may visit www.pattisonfuneralhome.com.
