SLOANE, Lorraine

SLOANE, Lorraine July 30, 1940 – December 26, 2024 It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Lorraine Sloane on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the age of 84 years old. Lorraine is survived by her children, Lori Watt and grandchildren Kate and Nolan Watt; son Daryn Blondheim; her brother, Dick (Yuki) Kanashiro; and her long-time partner and loving companion, Ron Mulligan. She is predeceased by her parents, Yasutaro and Kami Kanashiro, and her siblings, Ken, Jim, Jack, John, Yeiko, Fumi, and Helen.
Lorraine was born in Vancouver, BC on July 30, 1940. Shortly after her birth, the government forced her family and thousands of other Japanese Canadians into internment camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941. In 1942, Lorraine – then just a child – relocated with her parents and 8 siblings to a sugar beet farm in Southern Alberta. In spite of experiencing immense hardship early on in life, Lorraine remained driven by her compassionate and caring spirit. Motivated by her values and a fascination with medicine, she obtained an education at the Foothills Hospital School of Nursing in Calgary and went on to pursue a successful and fulfilling career as a nurse.
Lorraine lived in various Alberta communities over the years, spending most of her life in Lethbridge and Calgary. Over the years, her home became a sanctuary for her children’s friends who lacked a safe place to live, as well as other family members that needed a helping hand and a place to stay. Her home was always a welcoming space of liveliness, as friends were often dropping in for a visit and to enjoy her famous hospitality and her baking. Above all, Lorraine will be remembered for her generosity and resilience. She will be dearly missed.
A Funeral Service will be held at Evan J Strong Funeral Services North (3625 12 Street NE) on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada www.heartandstroke.ca.
