NIKOLAI “NICK” MENSCH 1940 ~ 2025 Nick (Nikolai) Mensch of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away peacefully at Legacy Lodge on June 27, 2025 at the age of 85 years. Despite Alzheimer’s Disease, he still knew his family, and we enjoyed wonderful visits that sparked the little twinkle in his eye and prompted his impish grin.
Nick was born on February 7, 1940 in Ukraine. At the age of six, he moved with his family to Coaldale, Alberta where he grew up and eventually moved to Lethbridge. One of his favourite memories was travelling by boat to Canada. He loved to tell the story of others bedridden with seasickness while he made friends with the crew and happily tagged along with them all over the ship for the whole journey.
Nick worked hard all of his life to take care of his family. As the son of newcomers to Canada, he had no choice but to leave school early to start work, but he made the most of the opportunities that came to him. His favourite jobs were working at the cheese factory in Coaldale (he could tell you a lot about the art of making cheese) and working for the Government of Alberta, driving truck and delivering pipe to hard-working farmers. He was a kind, loving, and generous husband, father, and grandfather. He didn’t complain about hard work or difficult circumstances, though he did occasionally have amusing opinions about difficult people. His greatest joy was spending time with family; he made many personal sacrifices for us and expected nothing in return.
Nick is survived by his daughter, Laura Mensch (Ken DeLong), his grandchildren, Olivia and Jackson DeLong, his brothers, Fred Mensch (Sunny Kim), William Mensch (Joan), Victor Mensch (Gloria), his sister, Elizabeth Byrne (John), and many nieces and nephews.
Nick was predeceased by his wife, Christine Mensch (Harms), his parents, Friedrich and Agnes Mensch (Sawatzky), and his brothers, Art and Harry Mensch.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025 at 2:00 pm at ROC CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES, 1220 – 23rd AVENUE, COALDALE, ALBERTA, with a light reception to follow.
