ANNA BAKANEC
Posted: September 20th, 2025 ANNA BAKANEC 1937 ~ 2025 It is with great sadness that the family of Anna Bakanec announces her passing at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the age of 88 years with family by her side.
Anna was born on June 2, 1937, in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan to George and Rosalie Steinkey. She grew up on the family farm in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. During her childhood, Anna and her family worked hard to keep the farm running.
Anna will be deeply missed by her children, Randy (Sheila) Anhelher, Charlotte Anhelher, Tracy Anhelher. Step-children, Debbie Bakanec-Kundert (Steve), Sherry Bakanec (Jim). Her loving grandson Tyler Anhelher (Jessalyn) and step-grandchildren, Alisha (Bill), Evan, Adaya (Devon). Her great-granddaughter, Rebecca, and step-great-grandsons Azrael and Pyriel. She is also remembered by her loving sisters Breketa, Betty, Johanna, and Cathy, along with many nieces and nephews. Anna was predeceased by her parents George and Rosalie Steinkey, husband Fred Anhelher in 1981, and second husband James Bakanec in 2001, step-children Janice and Jim.
Together Anna and Fred raised their family in Eston, Saskatchewan where Anna was a dedicated homemaker. Later they moved to Medicine Hat due to Fred’s ailments. Years later after Fred’s passing, Anna met James. They worked side-by-side for Wackenhut Security and enjoyed many years of dancing together. Anna was very crafty and loved to do any kind of craft with a passion for sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She was an excellent baker and enjoyed reading, watching movies and doing puzzles.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at the Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE, Medicine Hat) on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 1 p.m. with Fr. Fernando Genogaling celebrant. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery with lunch and fellowship in the Holy Family Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5).
