Posted: October 15th, 2025 1933 ~ IRENE COTE ~ 2025
Irene Marie Cote passed away on Thursday October 9th, 2025, at the age of 92 years. She left us knowing how deeply she was loved and that she will be missed immensely. Irene is predeceased by her husband, Ray Cote; son, Larry Cote; her parents, Sophie and Martin Reinheller; brother and sister-in-law, Benny and Esther Reinheller; brother, Albert Reinheller; sister and brother-in-law, Julia and Fred Haberlack. She is survived by her sisters, Katie Lutz and Lavina Slobodon and by her children, Charlotte (Don) Berthelette, Randy (Gisele) Cote, Darlene (Clinton) Miller and daughter in law, Janine Cote; eight grandchildren, Megan Wisnowski, Andy Cote, Angele Berthelette, Marcel (Raelene) Berthelette, Chantal (Sheldon) Andreas, Nathan (Tamara) Cote, Ashley (Wes) Miller, Ryan (Kaley) Miller; twenty great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Irene was born February 21st, 1933, on the family farm just south of Richmond Sask. She was the fifth child of a family of six children. At the age of 17, Irene moved to Medicine Hat to live with her two older sisters, Julia and Katie. She found employment with Medalta Potteries and worked on the assembly line from 1950 – 1952. She spoke fondly of the new friends she made there especially Pauline Kershman who later was her maid of honour. She married Ray Cote on April 15,1953 at St Pat’s church in Medicine Hat. As newly weds they moved into a basement suite on Industrial Ave. Soon their family was well on its way and in 1959 they moved into their new home. After four children their family was complete. Irene was a great cook and provided so many delicious meals for her family. It was even more special at holiday time with the traditional dishes that were made, especially her signature cabbage rolls and the never-ending pies and squares. Irene was an avid dog lover! She had a few over the years some intentionally chosen and others from one of the kid’s missions to rescue strays. One very special dog, an apricot toy poodle was her beloved Tessa. It gave Irene great pleasure sitting with her little fur ball and receiving her unconditional love. Over the years Irene worked at Sunnyside Nursing Home and later secured a full-time position at the Continental Inn managing the chamber maids and laundry duties. Irene worked hard but also found time to have some good laughs and joke around with the staff. Unfortunately, in 2001she had health problems which lead to her retirement. In March of 2009, her beloved husband, Ray passed away and a couple months later she moved into the Grandview Manor. She thoroughly enjoyed her little apartment and made new friendships, which over the years still kept in contact with. Irene enjoyed going for walks and frequently made trips to the Co-op for groceries and an opportunity to visit with the staff and also see a familiar face. Once again Irene was faced with a difficult health challenge and independent living wasn’t an option anymore. In June 2020, she left her apartment and moved in with a family member to assist with her care. After some adjusting and amazing strides she settled into her new surroundings. She enjoyed gatherings with family and when able, she visited with her sisters and brothers along with nieces and nephews. Irene and her siblings had great fun reminiscing as they were all quite the witty bunch! She had a great memory for birthdays, anniversaries and of those that had passed on way too soon and she was quick to give a call and convey well wishes or condolences or just to chat awhile. We will miss her dearly and always love her deeply. The Memorial Service will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 11:00 am.
