Born on August 23, 1950, to Laura and Gus Wentland, Larry spent his life nurturing young minds and fostering a deep love of sports, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. Larry dedicated over 30 years to teaching in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where he inspired countless students with his passion for learning and commitment to their growth. His influence extended beyond the classroom as he refereed high school basketball and football games, and umpired high school baseball, including slow pitch tournaments across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. His love for sports was evident not only in his professional life but also in his personal passions. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Larry was an ardent fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, rarely missing a game and often attending them with friends and family. His love for baseball shone through his unwavering support for the Toronto Blue Jays, with cherished memories of watching games on television with his family, especially with his sister Carol and brother-in-law Leon. Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gayle, whose memory remained a guiding light in his life. Their love story, filled with shared dreams and mutual respect, was an inspiration to all who knew them. Larry is survived by his beloved sister, Carol, and her husband, Leon. He took immense pride in his role as an uncle to his nephew, Terence, and cherished the time spent with Terence’s family, including his great-nephew, Elijah and great-niece, Phoenix. The bonds he shared with them were a source of joy and laughter throughout his life. As we say goodbye to Larry, we celebrate a life of compassion, generosity, and unwavering love. He will be profoundly missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew him. In honour of Larry’s memory, donation can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, acfonline@albertacancer.ca.
