It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James “Jim” Petersen, age 73, on November 30, 2025, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Jim went home quietly to be with his Lord and Saviour, leaving this world in peace and surrounded by love.
Jim will be forever loved and remembered by his wife, Linda Petersen; his son, Mike Petersen; his daughter, Sarah (Evan) Sloan; and his beloved grandchildren, Emree and Piper. He is also survived by his sisters, Joyce Carlson and Peggy (Floyd); his brother, Victor (Elizabeth); and his in-laws, who were an important part of his life and family; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Mina Petersen, and his brother John Petersen.
Born and raised in Medicine Hat, Jim was a proud railroader, following in his father’s footsteps and dedicating 35 years to CP Rail. He carried countless stories from those years stories he loved to share, especially as he grew older. After retirement, Jim found joy in traveling with his wife and close friends, returning many times to the beaches of Mexico and Jamaica where he was at his happiest, relaxed and laughing.
Above all else, Jim’s greatest passion was his family. He cherished his time with them he enjoyed family gatherings, even if he was always the first to leave. His family truly meant the world to him. Jim also gave his time generously, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and supporting his church community. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad, creating memories that stayed with him throughout his life. In recent years, he found comfort in quiet moments, bird watching and reminiscing about his railway days.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible staff on 4 West at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and to the compassionate team at St. Joseph’s Home for the exceptional care Jim received. Thank you as well to his devoted HCA’s who cared for him at home, and to Medicine Hat EMS for their kindness and professionalism. A very special thank you to Mj (Mitsi), who brought joy to Jim every single day and became family to all of us.
Jim’s warmth, kindness, humour, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
As per Jim’s wishes, there will be no funeral. Condolences may be made at www.gracememorial.com. Arrangements are made by
