HERNAN AUGUSTO CARDENAS
Posted: January 14th, 2026 HERNAN AUGUSTO CARDENAS May 23rd, 1947 – January 6th, 2026 With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Hernan Augusto Cardenas, of Medicine Hat, formerly of Valdivia, Chile, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the age of 78. He passed away surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
Hernan was born on May 23, 1947, in Valdivia, Chile, to Jose and Sefferina Cardenas. He spent his early years in Chile before building a life defined by devotion to family, hard work, and quiet strength.
He proudly served in the Chilean military and spent many fulfilling years coaching soccer, sharing his passion for the game with others. Hernan was also an active and proud member of the Chilean Association. For over 25 years, he owned and operated Nico’s Kitchen Exhaust, earning the respect of all who knew him through his dedication, integrity, and strong work ethic.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Hernan found his greatest joy in time spent with his family. He was deeply involved in volunteering at church and will be fondly remembered for his kindness, patience, sharp wit, and warm sense of humour that could brighten any room. His unwavering love, guidance, and support left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Hernan is lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Maria Cardenas; his children, Monica Cardenas (Eric), Hernan Cardenas, and Jeannette Cardenas (Daryle); his grandchildren, Stephanie, Andres, Nicholas, Sara, and Maria; and his six great-grandchildren, Emilio, Sophia, Dylan, Allison, Noelle, and Cassiel. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, George and Ana.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jose and Sefferina Cardenas, and his beloved grandchild, Santana Cardenas.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 1:00pm at Primera Iglesia Hispana Evangelica En Medicine Hat.
