DONALD “DON” JAMES OPP 1942 ~ 2026 Donald “Don” James Opp, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026 at the age of 83.
Don was born on June 3, 1942, in Claresholm, Alberta, to Bill and Martha Opp. He grew up with a deep appreciation for camping and wilderness pursuits in southern Alberta, which would remain central to his life and identity.
After studying petroleum engineering at SAIT, Don married Frances (Frankie) Chilton in 1964, his loving wife and partner of 62 years. He worked in the oil and gas industry in multiple locations, but Don and Frankie ultimately decided to move back to the Chilton family farm, southeast of Claresholm. Don and Frankie raised their family on the homestead and farmed together.
Don had a lifelong love of photography and was active with the Chinook Camera Club for decades. After retiring from farming, he devoted more time to this passion, earning his Professional Photographers of Canada accreditation, building a photographic studio, and serving clients throughout the Claresholm area for a number of years. His photography reflected his keen eye but also his deep love of nature and the community of which he was part.
Don was a man of many interests and pursuits. He enjoyed cowboy action shooting, snowmobiling, fishing, and time outdoors. He loved playing and listening to music, and would often play for ‘Folk Sunday’ services at Peace Lutheran Church in Claresholm. In later years, he and Frankie especially enjoyed their holiday trailer and weekend getaways to the Crowsnest Pass.
Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Frankie; his sons, Jim (Pam) and Rob; his grandchildren, Nevan, Maia, Celia, and Camila; and his brother, Terry. He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Martha Opp, and his sister, Sharon.
A Memorial Service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 126 – 43 Ave. West, Claresholm, on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., with Pastor Donna Alm officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to STARS Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 8M7, or to a charity of your choice.
