HARTY DOROTHY PAULINE HARTY, beloved wife of the late Math Harty, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, May 28, 2026, having recently celebrated her 90th birthday in such style.
Dorothy is survived by son, Dallas (Frances Bukkems); daughter, Melissa (Ron Pasolli); granddaughters, Gabriella & Marla; “adopted” grandsons, Mathew Barrett, Dexter Foat-Barrett, & Jaxon Foat Barrett. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Barbara Kanig & Joyce Harty, & brother-in-law Lawrence Harty.
Besides her loving husband, Mathias, she was predeceased by her sisters, Kay Black, Mary Budinski, Fran Barrett, & Martha King; brothers, Tony Kanig & Lawrence Kanig; sisters-in-law, Ann Kanig, Rose Foss, Margaret Harty, & Ruth Ann Harty, & brothers-in-law, Frank Harty, Ben Harty, Earl Foss, & Swede Black.
Dorothy Pauline King, born May 18, 1936, in Lethbridge, Alberta, was the youngest child of Alex & Sophia Kanig.
She was raised with her six siblings in the Hoping Area. She had fond memories of living on the Kanig Farm where Gma & Gpa Fitterer also resided. In 1950, they built a house in the same yard as the Hoping General Store (Kanig’s); Dorothy worked for her dad both at this store & the Nemiscam Store. Dorothy & Math knew each other throughout their childhood years & school days, & then went on to become high school sweethearts. They wed in 1957 & bunked in with Mom & Dad Harty. In 1963, they moved to the yard across the road from the original Harty Homestead where they hosted countless nieces, nephews, & children of family friends over the years. Not long after, their son, Dallas James, was born in the summer of 1966. To make their family complete, a daughter, Melissa Marie, was born in June of 1968.
Dorothy was active in many organizations & clubs including the Hoping 4-H Multi Club, County 4-H Council, Regional 4-H Council, Hoping WI, Sacred Heart CWL, & International Year of the Family Council. She also had a passion for sewing, crocheting, ceramics, & family history. In fact, Dorothy spent many hours researching for & putting together the Broken Spoke, which chronicles the history of the Anton Konig Family.
Upon retiring to Lethbridge in the late 90’s, Math & Dorothy built their dream home in Southridge where she spent much of her time cooking, baking, entertaining, & hosting holiday gatherings. Spending time serving communion at Assumption Church & making sure the flowers at the altar were always fresh were passions of Dorothy’s. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, going on trips with family & friends, & working in the yard & garden; her rose garden was something she was deeply proud of. One of her favourite things to do was to deliver communion to inmates at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre. Math & Dorothy also discovered a love of the racetrack which included owning multiple racehorses. The suggestion of spending an afternoon at the track was never turned down. She discovered a fondness for Beanie Babies & somehow convinced Math to help her as they hunted for at least 1000 of the precious stuffies. The massive collection was so precious to her. Dorothy was a spiritual pillar for her family, often fitting in time to attend mass multiple times throughout the week. Her devotion to both her faith and family was an incredible example to all who knew her. Not surprisingly, Dorothy’s favourite saying was … with God, all things are possible. Dorothy will live on in the hearts of so many.
