SARGENT Eileen
Posted: February 8th, 2013MRS. EILEEN SARGENT, beloved wife of the late Donald Sargent, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Lethbridge Regional Hospital. Eileen was born in Lincolnshire, England on January 25, 1927, the daughter of Frank and Anne Stephenson. She met Donald Sargent during the closing months of World War II, and they were married in 1946. They had three sons, Malcolm, John, and Paul.
In 1956 they left their families and friends and immigrated to Canada to begin a new life. They settled originally in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and a few years later moved to Brandon, where Eileen trained as a secretary. The three boys completed their education in Brandon and began their own lives and families, and in 1975 Don and Eileen moved to Lethbridge, where Don worked as circulation manager for the Lethbridge Herald, and Eileen worked as a secretary at Lethbridge Community College, and later as a legal secretary.
Don and Eileen had developed a love for the outdoors, travel, and golf, and over the last three decades they travelled extensively in North America, at first camping, later in a fifth wheel, sightseeing, picture-taking, and, of course, golfing. After Don’s death in 2000 Eileen stopped travelling, but continued golfing until physical disabilities would no longer allow it. Also at that time, she was embraced by the clergy and congregation of St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, and took great comfort in their spiritual guidance, their fellowship and friendship.
Eileen was an avid reader, and read voraciously. She particularly loved mystery novels. She took a keen interest in the people surrounding her, and right to the end was able to address everyone by name and inquire after their children and loved ones by name as well.
Eileen was predeceased by her parents, two of her three sisters, her husband Don, and, most tragically, her dear, youngest son, Paul. She is survived by her sons Malcolm and John, daughters-in-law Marilyn, Donna, and Judy, grandchildren Morgan, Katrina, Corey, and Brendan, great-grandchildren Sebastien, Nathan, Kathleen, and Martin, sister Rosemary, and many nieces and nephews.
During the last year of her life Eileen was cared for wonderfully by the staff of the Extendicare Fairmont Park in Lethbridge. She made many friends there. And in the final week she received dedicated care from the physicians and nursing staff at Lethbridge Regional Hospital. Her soul took its flight comfortably and very peacefully in the company of her eldest son, Malcolm.
A Vigil will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, in the Waterton Suite, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge, with Canon James Robinson officiating. According to her wishes her remains are being cremated.
