Posted: April 20th, 20131931 ~ 2013
Jean Marie Gergel (nee Arthur), beloved wife of John, passed away peacefully in Lethbridge, Alberta on April 14, 2013 at the age of 81 years.
Jean was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on July 8, 1931 and was the eldest of James (Jim) and Marie Arthur’s five daughters. She grew up on the family farm in Iron Springs and attended Huntsville School. After graduation, Jean pursued secretarial training at Garbutt Business College in Lethbridge and then worked for Lethbridge Laundry. Jean loved music and old-time dancing and attended many local dances where she met her future husband John. They were married on November 18, 1952 in Lethbridge and settled on their mixed farm in the Turin area. Jean loved life in the country. Raising four boys on a busy farm was no easy feat, but her smile and contagious laugh shone through every day. She was creative in the kitchen, had a green thumb in the garden and loved learning new crafts by attending many community workshops.
Jean and John retired to the Uplands neighbourhood in Lethbridge in 2001. She and John continued to enjoy dining, dancing and spending time with the grand and great-grandchildren.
Jean is survived by her husband of 60 years, John, four sons: Rodney (Maureen) and Leslie from Turin; Darren (Rosemary), Edmonton; Allan, Lethbridge, 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters Marlene (Bert) Bosch, Shirley (John) Bartsoff, Margaret Faye (Jim) Ripley, and Gail (Laurance) Jones. Jean was predeceased by her parents Jim and Marie Arthur and grandson Jason Gergel.
You will always be cherished in our hearts as a loving wife, mom, grandma and sister that will never be forgotten. It is time for you to rest.
