WHEELDON, Clayton Ronald

Passed away suddenly on Monday, May 25, 2020 at the age of 46 years. Clayton will be dearly missed by his loved ones. Clayton is survived by his two sons, Damien of Cornerbrook, NL and Austin of Lethbridge, AB; his loving finance, Jodie VanBeers of Taber, AB and her children, Blake, Levi and Kinlee; his dad, Gerry (Kathy) Kultgen of Drumheller, AB; his sister, Tracy Hughson of Calgary, AB and her children, Treston, Haven and Walker; his brother, Kelly Kultgen of Drumheller, AB and his sister, Candace (Chris) Larson of Medicine Hat, AB and her son, Matthew as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Clayton was predeceased by his mother, Shirley Kultgen in 2006 as well as his grandmother, May Hughson and his grandparents, Lawrence and Barb Kultgen.

Clay was overjoyed to be marrying his soulmate, Jodie in the summer of 2020 and looked forward to a fulfilling life with her and their family together. His boys, Austin and Damien were his pride and joy and always on his mind. Clay usually had a dedicated, four-legged sidekick; most recently, Axel and previously, the notorious, Impala who was well known far and wide. Clay was an accomplished welder who spent many long days working diligently to provide for his family.

Clay’s passion for demolition derbies was almost immeasurable. He developed this passion early in life with his dad, uncles, brother and close friends and it continued for over thirty years. Clay spent countless hours building derby cars then smashing them and was constantly on the lookout for the next score to add to his stash of cars. He had a reputation for being a fierce competitor in the ring and for his willingness to help others that might need his expertise. Not only did he often win or place in derbies, he also often received recognition for both being most aggressive and most sportsmanlike. Through demolition derbies, Clay developed many close and cherished, personal friendships. #007 Legend Killer will be greatly missed in the derby community.

Clay loved watching his kids play hockey, hunting, camping and spending time with family and friends. He had an impact on everyone he came in contact with, was always friendly and personable to young and old alike and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Clay loved to laugh and to make people laugh and constantly had a joke, a crude remark or a teasing word with a twinkle in his eye. “Hey Bud” “What’s up” “Suck it” “Hoodrat” “Heeey Brooo” “Go for a Rip” “Are you grumpy?”

Clayton was one of a kind. He will be missed dearly.

When I first met Clayton I remember feeling like he was not to be bothered haha, but over the years I worked with him he quickly changed into a mentor, a gentleman and someone I could always confide in. He was also the type of person who was always willing to ask how you were. For me he was a lighthouse in stormy weather. I’ll always remember him, thank you brother.

I just wanted to pass along my sincere condolences to Clay’s family and friends. As mentioned in his obituary he had friends far and wide and always made an impression as is the case with myself. I met Clay back in 99 or 2000 when I moved to Calgary. We used to hang out with my wife and his then girlfriend who were good friends. He and I immediately hit it off as I really enjoyed his no nonsense down to earth personality. I hadn’t seen or spoken to him in a long time as we eventually moved back home but, I would hear of him and Damien now and again through Melanie. I was truly saddened when I just found out this news today. God bless all his family and friends. RIP Clay……I’m sure Impala was happy to see you buddy. God bless from the Kennedy Family……NL

Jay and I worked with Clayton at BCT. He was such a nice guy, give you the shirt off his back! We used to make sure we saw at least one derby of his each year ( usually Vulcan) and Clayton and I used to joke about me taking out his car “if there was anything left of it” I am certainly glad there never was lol, but I know he’d have let me try if there had been. Our condolences to Clayton’s family, such a beautiful soul gone way too soon!

  26. Dwayne Wilson says:
