Joan Gloria Schaufele

1957 – 2020

Joan Gloria Schaufele went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at the age of 63 years.

Joan was born on March 3, 1957 in Taber, Alberta, to Albert and Sarah (Sally) Schaufele from Bow Island. She was the much-loved sister of John (Rennie) Schaufele, Paul (Betty-Jo) Schaufele, Rachel (Wayne) Booker, and Sue (Bill) Smienk.

For many years, Joan was an extraordinary math and handbell teacher at Glenmore Christian Academy in Calgary. In 2006, Joan was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (blood cancer) and retired from teaching. Once she was in remission, Joan moved back to Lethbridge to be closer to her family, including dearly loved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. She was also an active member of several handbell choirs, Lethbridge Scottish Country Dancing and was a passionate quilter.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 5, 2020, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Friends are also welcomed to attend an outdoor send off with an honour guard and bagpipes at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 6, 2020 (in the parking lot at Martin Brothers) before the family leaves for a private service and burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to be made to Southern Alberta Bible Camp, Box 99, Lomond, AB TOL IGO, Myeloma Canada, 1255 Trans Canada Route, Dorval, Quebec H9P 2V4, or a charity of one’s choice.

Joan was a lovely lady who I had the privilege to encounter through her involvement in handbells. Her passion and creativity in music along with her enthusiastic and positive personality is how I will fondly remember Joan. My sincere sympathy to her family.

  4. Alicia Dykstra says:

So sorry to loose Joan from the land of the living. Remember fondly our many quilting bees together. My kids loved her as the bell choir director at First B in Calgary. Her love and hospitality was exemplary. I will miss her!

  5. Betty Joy Harris says:

Thanking Joan for the gifts of her genius as a high school math teacher, of her passionate love for teaching children, and of her generous spirt to share her time and talents with everyone. Although retired, Joan volunteered to tutor my granddaughter, Braelan Harris, who was struggling with grade 12 math. Braelan is now in her last year of the Bachelor of Education programme at Ambrose University in Calgary. Braelan wants to be a teacher like Joan, the kind of teacher who makes a lasting difference in the lives of their students. Joan touched so many lives, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

  6. Sheila and Joe says:

We are so sorry to learn of Joan’s passing but rejoice that she has arrived at her home destination: she is with Jesus and ringing bells in heaven in great celebration.
She was much loved and will be greatly missed by those who knew her. Sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.
    Sheila and Joe

  7. Janel Harris says:

Very thankful to have gotten to know Joan over the years at First Baptist Calgary. She blessed us all with her musical gifts. She was also a patient teacher, working with the youth bell choir and later helping to tutor my daughter in her studies. Thank you Joan and we know you are now enjoying your heavenly home – love your sisters in Christ, Janel and Braelan

  8. Eric says:

I feel blessed to have been taught by Joan while a student at GCA. She taught with expertise and patience and always made time to help students who needed extra help. I was always struck by the beauty of the handbell choir performances that she directed. She treated students with respect while holding them to a high standard and I am grateful for her teaching and also the example she set while living a Christ-centered life. Thank you Ms. Schaufele!
