GARNER, Maureen
Posted: August 14th, 2020It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Mom, Maureen, on August 7, 2020, after a very short but courageous battle with cancer. She was 85 years old – born on February 2, 1935 to Haydn and Verna Spencer. Predeceased by her parents, brother Duane and sister Susan.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by: daughter Cindy (Richard) Coolidge, grandchildren Jennifer (Kevin), Jeremy (Akari), Pamela, great grandchildren Devany (Eric), Connor (Sullivan), Emma ; daughter Pam Garner (Deb Marek); son Greg (Cheryl) Garner and grandchildren Morgan and MacCoy Garner.
Mom also leaves to mourn: her best friend (of over 50 years) Maureen Heckbert, her very special cousin Gerrie Dowdle, and her recently found half-sister Janet Cordwin.
Mom wanted everyone to know she had no regrets.
She was able to see the Giant Pandas with Cindy and Pam at the Calgary Zoo. This was the dream of a lifetime.
She spent time with Pam in Phoenix for her 85th birthday and was able to watch her beloved Cubs play at Spring Training.
She was a lifelong fan of horse racing and got to the local track with her longtime friends Shirley and June as many Sundays as possible. Going to Century Mile racetrack in Edmonton with her best friend Maureen and her daughter Tracey, as well as Cindy and Pam, was beyond her expectations.
She was a volunteer at Helen Schuler Nature Center for over 17 years as a meeter/greeter. She met people from all over the world, thousands of school children and had a very special bond with Peg Leg the Crow. She loved Schuler!
She wanted to make special mention of the Royal Canadian Legion where she was a devoted member since 1966.
“To my two remarkably awesome daughters: they were hit out of the blue with a high-risk situation we knew nothing about, but said ‘Bring it On’ and took very good care of me.”
Thank you to the doctors and nurses on 3C at Chinook Regional Hospital for their extraordinary care of mom, as well as to the compassionate staff at St. Mike’s Palliative Care unit, who were with us at the very end.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted at Friends of Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society, 910 – 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB. T1J 0P6 or online at: naturecentre.ca/donate
As per mom’s request, and due to the restrictions of Covid-19, there will be no funeral service.
