FLETCHER, Doreen Hazel

January 10, 1934 – January 15, 2022

Doreen Hazel Fletcher, nee Malacko of Calgary went to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 15th, 2022, at the age of 88 years. Doreen was born in Lethbridge, AB on January 10th, 1934, the seventh child of nine born to John and Angela Malacko.

Doreen completed high school in Lethbridge and her registered nursing diploma from the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. She nursed in Vancouver, Lethbridge, Edmonton, and Ponoka before meeting and marrying Frank in 1964. Together they moved to the Peace Country to farm, nurse and raise their family. Doreen was passionate about nursing and enjoyed midwifery, cardiology, psychiatry, and palliative care. She worked full-time for 42 years before her retirement.

Christian faith was also a very important part of life for Doreen, and she was deeply involved in her local church and children’s camp ministry. Her life verses were “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”. Her faith prepared her well for end-of-life, trusting in God for her journey to her eternal home. She was appreciative of the care she received from the many doctors and nurses over the past few years and more recently from the CNSs with the Palliative Care Consult Service and the staff at Chinook Hospice.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Cathie and Cary Pochailo; Angie and Warren Ferguson; her grandchildren Jennifer (Nick) May; Samantha Stannard; Stuart and Isibéal Ferguson; her great grandchildren Ruari, Finleigh, and Elwin May and Levi Stannard; her brother Edward (Edna) Malacko, and her sister Jean Strong; and special friend Nelda Priddle; numerous nieces and nephews; many dear friends and classmate alumni.

Doreen was predeceased by her husband Frank in 2007; her father John in 1969, her mother Angela in 1984; her sister Marie in 1928; her brother Gerald in 1999; her sister Leona in 2005; her brother Ernest in 2013; and brothers James and Richard in 2016.

A celebration of life will be held in Fairview AB at the Dunvegan Motor Inn on July 2, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. A private family graveside service will be held at Whitelaw Cemetery.
