1948 – 2022
In Lethbridge, Alberta, early on the morning of 20 March, 2022, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend Marie Galoria (Hughes) Mehrer went on before us to be with her Saviour, leaving behind Eldon Mehrer, her loving husband of forty-eight years.
She is survived by her siblings, Roy Hughes, Kenneth Hughes, Robert Hughes, Alice Hughes-Welch, Bessie (Hughes) Holmes, Margaret (Hughes) Phelps, Helen Hughes, and Shirley Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Eula (Thompson) Hughes, her siblings: Ernest Hughes, Charlie Hughes, James Hughes, Betty (Hughes) Eveleth, and twin grandsons Jadon and Mason Whitman.
Born 21 April, 1948 in Harrisburg, Oregon to Gordon and Eula (Thompson) Hughes, her passing is mourned by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Lydia (Michael Jr.) Hostetler; Andreas (Trista), Emery, Damaris, and Merlin, Terry (Laura) Mehrer; Denton; Grayden, Royden (Laura); Bentley, and Brendan (Alexis); Kinsley, Larry (Mona Baker) Mehrer; Carsen, Randyl (Tricia) Mehrer; Alyssa; Sara, Kacey, and Kegan, Gloria (John) Whitman; Jasmyne, Braxton, and Hailey, Danny (Gabriela) Mehrer; Eldon, Mia, and Danika, Jenny (Daryl) Weber; Aisling, Hudson, Siobhan, and Ruari, Krystal Mehrer; Kenneth, Greyson, and Kiersten, Martha Mehrer, Grace Mehrer (Trevor Sherwick); Waylon, and Bonnita (Peter) Wurz; Landon. She is also remembered by many others whom she loved as her own.
Marie was a devoted follower of Christ and placed great importance on loving others as she was loved by Him. This was felt profoundly by all who were privileged to meet her, but none so much as her own family. As a young girl she was welcomed into the homes of the two wonderful women that her children were privileged to call grandmothers. Minerva Kropf and Josie (Reeder Baker) Schlabach set incredible examples for her in raising a family who knew that their mother’s love for them was rooted in the love of God. As a result of her belief in Christ as her Lord and Saviour, she was blessed to meet her husband through church connections. When they married six months later, on 25 May, 1973, their home became a place for friends, family, and her delicious pies, which Eldon learned were not made ‘as easy as pie’.
As a mother of eleven, she worked hard to keep hungry tummies fed, keeping a garden for most of her married life. She enjoyed seeing her rows of jars ready for the table, especially her pickles, which were her most popular canned food. Her giving heart was well-known; her grand- and great-grandchildren were gifted with lovingly-made blankets and family and friends alike were presented with cleverly-made kitchen hand towels for their oven-door handles. Of all her accomplishments and abilities, her love matters most. She loved well.
She was a safe place for many, always ready to listen, and could be found in recent years, catching up on her reading time with her Bible on her lap. She loved the ocean and her lighthouse collection held pride of place in her home. She also loved the mountains and we all have many childhood memories of hiking, having winter picnics, feeding deer leftover popcorn, and skipping rocks on Waterton Lake.
Her family misses her deeply, taking joy in the hope of seeing her beautiful smile again, while also wondering who we are without her.
