POHJAKAS, Lilian
Posted: March 26th, 2022Lilian Pohjakas
1928 – 2022
Lilian Pohjakas (nee Luts) was born in Piirsalu, Estonia, 93 years ago. She was the youngest of 7 children, born into a privileged life. Lilian spent an idyllic childhood on her family estate, until the ravages of WWII stole her home, her eldest brother, her united family, and her opportunities. Along with her parents she fled to Germany and Sweden and then finally to Halifax, NS.
Mom met her husband to be, in Vancouver and married Kaljo Pohjakas in Matsqui, BC on June 25, 1949. Daughter Lea followed in 1951 and 15 years later, daughter Tiina arrived. Along with Kaljo and their children, Lilian travelled the world, lived in exotic countries, and entertained innumerable dignitaries.
Lilian and Kaljo moved to Lethbridge in the early 70’s and she quickly made lifelong friends playing duplicate bridge, winning golf tournaments and power walking through the coulees. Lilian was an exquisite hostess, a generous friend, an elegant wife, and an unconditional lover of family. Lilian’s final year and a half was spent at Mark and Lea’s home, where dementia (Alzheimer’s) and other physical difficulties made life a different kind of adventure. Lilian often expressed gratitude for a life well lived, and we thank the Lord for our mom, our nana, a woman of extraordinary selfless love and kindness.
Mom was predeceased by Kaljo, on June 23, 2018, 2 days before their 75th wedding anniversary.
Lilian is survived by daughter Lea Switzer (Mark)- their children Arthur Switzer (Catherine) son Oliver Switzer; Eva Lamb (Jason) son Noah, daughters Eden, Charlotte and Lucy Lamb; Anna Switzer: daughter Tiina Williams (Darryl) and sons Dexter and Tyson Williams. Lilian is also survived by special friend Adrian Geers.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at FREE GRACE CHURCH, 1807 AB-2A, Lethbridge, AB T1H 0G4
