JOANNE IRENE HEDENSTROM, of Hillspring, passed away suddenly, on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the age of 78 years.
Joanne was born on August 30, 1943. She was a third generation Albertan who grew up on her grandfather’s Pioneer Farm and went on to lecture in three of Alberta’s universities.
She is known throughout Alberta as a citizen advocate for animal rights, environmental issues and conservation. A deep abiding lover for animals was very evident at an early age. It would be a common sight to see her with her dog on her horse out for an adventure in the river bottom. Quite simply, Joanne loved the land, she will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Service will take place at HILL SPRING COMMUNITY CENTRE, 137 – 2 Avenue South, Hill Spring, AB, on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 2:00 P.M.

I had only recently met Joanne who is the aunt of my husband, Randy Joubin. Unfortunately, we never had the opportunity to meet in person but texted back and forth a fair amount. I was always struck by her intelligence, heart and breadth of interests. I will miss her.
Joanne was not only my aunt but also a life long friend. She is remembered for her charm and intelligence.
I miss her.
To the friends and family of Joanne… I think this is the same person who became an English Professor, at UBC in Vancouver. If this is the case I would appreciate hearing from someone. I was trying to track her down in 2022 from an old letter I had from her in the 70’s when she lived in Pincher creek.
She was a bundle of energy and joy, with a passion for animals and the outdoors.
