LEWIS Our beloved, SYLVIA ‘MAE’ LEWIS, passed away on December 2, 2022, at St. Therese Villa, Lethbridge, AB. She was 100 years old.
Mae was born in Birtle, MB on October 2, 1922, the first and oldest child to Sylvia and Neal McKay. As a young child, Mae and her family, moved to Travers, AB where Mae lived a loving, hard-working, and family-filled upbringing on their family farm.
In 1943 Mae married Leslie Lewis and they had three children, Roy, Linda, and Fay. They farmed in the Travers area until 1958, and then relocated to Picture Butte, AB and opened the Lewis General Store. Moving to Picture Butte also meant wonderful modern conveniences they had never had on the farm, electricity, a telephone, and indoor plumbing. Once the children grew up, Mae and Les moved to Lethbridge but eventually made their way back to the town they loved, Picture Butte. In 1968, Mae began working at Woolco Department store, a job that she adored, until her retirement.
Everyone who knew Mae felt her big heart and giving nature. If you showed up at her door you would be invited in for a cup of coffee, delicious homemade bread and jam, or a meal. She was also a huge fan of sports, especially baseball. The Dodgers were her team. She loved going to the Pioneer baseball games, especially when the Dodgers & Expos A teams were playing in Lethbridge. With grandchildren in tow, Mae faithfully watched and supported the Pioneer games, and then would stop at A&W for a burger and a root beer before heading back to Picture Butte.
After her retirement Mae learned to golf. She golfed for many years and her early morning golf games with friends were among her fondest memories. In her later years, Mae filled her time volunteering, visiting with friends and family, and reading many, many books.
More than anything, Mae loved spending time with her family, and she profoundly missed her beloved family who passed before her: parents Sylvia and Neal McKay, husband, Leslie Lewis, brother Charlie McKay, sister-in-law Clara McKay, sister Janet Dickout, brother-in-law Clarence Dickout, sister-in-law Margaret McKay, brother Jim McKay, and sister-in-law Arlene McKay, son LeRoy Lewis, daughter Fay Neher, son- in laws Nick Zombori and Gary Neher.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Zombori, brothers, Fred McKay, Murray (Shirley) McKay, as well as grandchildren Tracy (Todd) Kopp, Tobi (Greg) Horon, Monica (Randy) Podloski, Marci (Terry) Neher-Schwengler, Darcy (Lisa) Neher, Lisa (Chris) McNeely, and Shawn (Andreina) Lewis as well as many nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who loved her dearly.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday December 13, 2022 at 2:30pm at THE TRINITY UNITED CHURCH, 528 Maple Cres, Picture Butte, AB.
Friends are welcome to meet with the family on Monday December 12, 2022 from 7:00 to 8:00pm at SALMON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME, 433 Stubb Ross Road South, Lethbridge, AB.
