Hilma was born in Warwarowka Ukraine on October 10, 1932 to Eduard and Emilie Besler, the second oldest of five children. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1952, settling in Stirling Alberta where she worked the sugar beets before becoming a nurse’s aide at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge, then continuing nursing in Kelowna for several years.
Upon returning to Lethbridge, she met her husband Heinz and relocated to Calgary where they were blessed with two children, first a daughter Rose and then a son Ron.
