SHIPLEY, Arla
Posted: September 27th, 2023 SHIPLEY ARLA GRACE SHIPLEY passed away peacefully on Sunday September 17, 2023 in the Cardston hospital at the age of 93 years.
Arla was born on July 13th 1930 to Orren Archibald (Archie) Shipley and Lau Wella (Stout) at the family farm in Glenwood Alberta. She was the eldest of 9 children. Arla attended school in Glenwood, graduating in 1949, at which time she moved to Calgary AB and attended SAIT and Henderson Business College graduating with diplomas in dress making, cooking and typing, skills she used throughout her life.
In 1953 she married and, as a Military wife the family moved every 3 years. They lived in Ottawa ON, Iserlohn Germany, Edmonton AB, Petawawa ON. The marriage ended in divorce and in 1967 she moved to Lethbridge AB (to be closer to family) where she raised her 6 Children. Her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to her 4 girls and 2 boys.
Arla was an active member of the LDS Church serving three senior missions: one in Quebec and two at the Salt Lake City Family History Centre. She was the family genealogist and enjoyed teaching others about family research. In her later years she enjoyed serving in the Cardston Temple and volunteering at the Cardston Family History Centre.
Arla is survived by her six children: Richard (LynneMarie) Palmer of Jackson, WY, Maureen Palmer (Gordon Walker) of High River, AB, Wendy Palmer of Lethbridge, AB, Kenneth Palmer of Lethbridge, AB, Karen (Richard) Hansen of Calgary, Marcella (Jason) Lenfesty of Roberts Creek, BC, 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, sisters Louene Prince, Flora Law – Swenson, Violet Anderson and brother Ralph Shipley.
Arla was predeceased by grandson Jeffrey Palmer, parents Archie and Lau Wella Shipley, sisters: Joan Mysyk, Wilma Wood and two brothers: Randy Shipley, Leo Shipley (infant), and her in-laws who were very supportive to her: Harold & Ottilie Palmer.
The family would like to thank her sister in-law and our Aunt Val Shipley, for the many hours she spent taking care of mom when the family could not be there.
Friends may meet the family on Friday, September 29 from 10:00- 10:45 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel, Cardston. Funeral to follow at 11:00 am with interment in Glenwood Cemetery.
