LAYTON, Patrick “Pat”

Posted: April 30th, 2024

LAYTON PATRICK “PAT” DALE LAYTON, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Gerrie Layton, was born on May 10, 1947, in Cardston, AB, and passed away peacefully with family by his side at St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit, on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at the age of 76 years.
Pat had a passion for all sports. He played, coached, volunteered, refereed, and watched, but golf was the top of the list. He had a strong presence at the Lethbridge Country Club, where he was a member for nearly 30 years and served on the board. The rounds played at Whitefish Lake Golf Course were almost always followed by a trip to the Bulldog with whomever he played with that day. Pat was also a leader in the Southern Alberta basketball community, where he refereed for over 25 years.
Along with sports, Pat’s other passion was spending time with family and friends at the cabin in Whitefish. The pride he took in taking care of the cabin was evident to anyone who stopped by for a beer and a fire.
Pat worked for Agriculture Canada for 38 years. Through his work with the CFIA, Pat was able to see much of Canada, where the impression he left was that of professionalism and kindness wherever he went.
Besides his loving wife of nearly fifty-six years, Gerrie (née Garner), Pat is survived by his son; Mike (Heather) Layton, four beloved grandchildren, Connor and Adam Layton and Graham and Allison Barnouw. Pat is also survived by his mother, Bert Coates, three brothers, Dan, Ken and Max Layton, sister-in-law Kathy (Randy) Dodd, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Kris Barnouw, father Leroy “Bish” Layton, stepfather Ron Coates and parents-in-law Elmer and Mabel Garner. Pat leaves behind many dear friends whom he treasured greatly.
Special thank you to Dr. Benke, Tanya and all of the wonderful staff at the Jack Ady Cancer Centre for their exceptional care of Pat over the last year.
A Celebration of Pat’s life will be held at McKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 – 15 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. with Patrick Siedlecki officiating.
