BOURKE, Myles
Posted: July 6th, 2024 BOURKE MYLES EUGENE BOURKE, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Betty (Elizabeth Anne), passed away on July 3rd, 2024.
Myles was born December 2nd, 1941 in Kapuskasing, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce, and achieved his Chartered Accountant designation in 1968. Betty and Myles were married August 7, 1965 in Toronto and moved their family to Lethbridge in 1973.
His career with KPMG spanned from 1967 to 2001, then he was involved with various committees and President of Alberta’s Institute of Chartered Accountants from 2000 to 2005. He was corporate director for certain Lethbridge companies, then served on the National Board of Management of the Canada Revenue Agency from 2005 to 2018.
His favourite activities were downhill skiing and hiking. He regularly skied all the mountains within a two-day radius of home, and frequented the trails of Waterton Glacier Park with family and friends. He enjoyed travelling with his family, and was fortunate to make multiple cross Canada trips through his work in KPMG’s Research and Training Department and as office inspector. His family was blessed by the friendships made through the monthly Bridge group and annual family Christmas gift exchange. Myles enjoyed cards, board games, and jazz.
Myles had a generous heart, sharing his gifts of organization, planning, and bringing people together. Known for his fundraising abilities, he Chaired the Rotary Lobsterfest and Knights of Columbus Western Tailgate Party for many years. He was active in Rotary, serving as president 1997-98, district treasurer 1994-95, and the Chair of the Friendship Exchange Committee 1999-2000. In later years Myles was active with the Knights of Columbus, Grand Knight of the St. Martha council 2014-16, president of the Southern Alberta Chapter 2016-19, and District Deputy 2018-2020.
Myles enjoyed his community work, which included the Homebuilders Association of Lethbridge, Historama Lethbridge, Lethbridge Exhibition, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, City of Lethbridge Economic Development Committee (Chair 1985-86), Chinook Country Tourist Association, Lethbridge West PC Association, Lethbridge and District Business Development Centre, University of Lethbridge Senate and Board, CESO, and Lethbridge Airshow Board. Myles was elected Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2004, received the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, and named Grand Knight of the Year for Alberta and NWT in 2016.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Betty of almost 59 years, daughters Robin (Sister M. Benedicta, FSGM), Kelly and Katherine, siblings Louise Kozlowski, Michael (Wendy) and their children and grandchildren, David (Shannon) and their children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Eugene and Irene Bourke and brother-in-law Bob Kozlowski.
Relatives and Friends are invited to Prayer Services at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Boulevard W., Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, July 8, 2024 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Michael Pollard officiating.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. with Father William Monis celebrating. Both the Prayer Service and Funeral Mass will be live-streamed and may be viewed through Myles’ obituary on the Cornerstone website.
A private Family Interment will be held.
