TKACHUK-FURUKAWA VALENTINA TKACHUK – FURUKAWA passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Health Centre on her 74th birthday, March 10, 2025.
With bravery, determination and pure grit, she didn’t let ALS get her down. With her friends by her side and the excellent care of Dr Walsh and the Palliative Care Team, she played cards, cared for “Elvis” her cat, visited the gym and cared for herself until the final short weeks.
Valentina’s passion for adventure led her to travel extensively, scuba dive, hike in the mountains, go on horseback adventures and of course, take photography trips, with several of her photos winning awards.
She earned a Master’s degree in special education and taught locally. She had many interests and one of the was Toastmasters! For over 15 years, she was a dedicated member, club officer, conference volunteer and inspired speaker. She gave back to her community through volunteering with the LSCO Christmas Dinner, Great West Theater and others. Valentina expressed her faith freely and generously improved the lives of countless others.
She is survived by her sister Beverly Hutton, and was predeceased by her husband Richard Furukawa and her parents. Her many friends, near and far, will miss her laughter, jokes, enjoyment of life and compassion for others.
As per her wishes, no funeral will be held.
If friends so desire, donations in Valentina’s name can be made to the ALS Society of Alberta (alsab.ca)
