Kenneth Gordon Weiss passed away in Maple Creek, December 4, 2012 at the age of 83.
Ken, born April 12, 1929 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, was the second eldest of six children born to John and Bertha Weiss.
Ken is survived by his son Warren and Warren’s family Jamie (Carmen) Makenna and Nikolas, Mark (Monique) and Jaxsen. Son Lance (Jayne) and their family Cole, Taylorre and Landen. Son Bryce (Dena) and their family Clark (Beth) and Shelby. Daughter Loree (Larry Couture) and their family Chantel (Justin) and Jerrica, Rhett and Ryland.
Ken is also survived by his sisters Frances (Erik Nielsen) of Chilliwack, Rose Marie (Robert Pender) of Elkwater, Alta and sister-in-law Vera Weiss of Maple Creek.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, his wife Lorna, his eldest sister Ella Weiss, brother John Weiss and sister Gloria Bowyer.
Ken grew up on the farm south of Irvine with his four siblings. He attended Sentinel School south of Irvine and when he began school he could hardly speak a word of English. When he wasn’t in school his time was spent working on the farm. He remembered working hard, attending the Neuburg Church and going to dances in Elkwater on Saturday nights.
John and Bertha purchased the Kealey place south of Piapot in 1949 and this was where Ken got his start in ranching. He built a 12×16 shack as his first house on the Kealey place. The Schaal place on the bench south of Piapot was purchased in 1952. That same fall, at an Old Timer’s dance in Maple Creek, he met Lorna Francis from Admiral, Sask. who was teaching at Crossfell School.
Ken and Lorna were married on June 29, 1953 and continued to reside in the Piapot area until they purchased the Bettis ranch south of Maple Creek in 1958. Ken spent the balance of his ranching career on this ranch with the help of his sons. He loved the ranch, his family and his Charolais cattle. Ken sold the ranch to Lance and Bryce in 1997 and he and Lorna continued to reside there until they moved to Maple Creek in the summer of 2007.
Friends who wish may remember Ken with a donation to the Southwest Healthcare Trust, c/o Cypress Credit Union.
The funeral service was held at the Maple Creek United Church on December 8, 2012 with Rev Eva Stanley officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons Jamie, Mark, Cole, Clark and Landen Weiss, Rhett and Ryland Couture. Candlelighters were granddaughters Taylorre and Shelby Weiss and Chantel Couture.
