1915 ~ ROMFO ~ 2013
Posted: January 30th, 2013Mrs. Hazel Romfo of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Mr. Harris Romfo, passed away with Dean at her side on Sunday, January 27th, 2013 at the age of 97 years. Hazel leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Dean (Rick) Romfo Van Camp of Calgary; one grandson, Bradley Harris (Lyssa) Van Camp of Calgary; one brother, Morton (Norma) Seaman of Choiceland; Saskatchewan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Harris; her parents Henry and Tressa Seaman, two brothers, Hilliard Seaman and Harry Seaman; and one sister, Edna Bradley. Hazel was born on December 21st, 1915 on the family farm, four and a half miles south of Semans, Saskatchewan. She graduated high school at Govan, Saskatchewan and attended normal school in Saskatoon, where she received her Teaching Certificate in 1932. She married Harris Romfo on July 7th, 1938 at Nipawin, Saskatchewan. Hazel taught at Canyon School near North Battleford, Bridgeland, and then Four Corners near Meadowlake. She lived in Calgary for a number of years, while Harris obtained his Vocational Certificate. Hazel and Harris settled in Medicine Hat in 1943. When Dean entered school, she returned to teaching her favorite – those wonderful Grade 1 children – ultimately retiring in 1974. In 1993, Hazel was awarded the Honoured Educator Award for Recognition of Exemplary Service to Education and in 2005, received the Golden Hero Award for Recognition and Appreciation for Volunteer Contributions, which included many years delivering Meals on Wheels with Harris and, following Harris passing, with her good friend Norma Nelson. As a couple, they were also Senior Hosts for Tourism Alberta in their 23 years as snowbirds in Arizona. Hazel spent years in Thailand and loved travelling. She travelled to 119 different countries with Harris before his passing in 2002. Hazel loved the company of family and friends and will be forever missed and fondly remembered by them. The Funeral Service will be held in SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Kevin Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in the Family Plot at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Hazels memory may be made to an educational and/or animal charity of ones choice. Heartfelt sympathy to the family of Mrs Romfo. She was the teacher of both our daughters, Janet and Carmen Bauer, and will be fondly remembered as being a caring and loving teacher. She inspired her students.
