Posted: May 10th, 2013Mrs. Margaret “Thelma” Johnston of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Mr. Arnold Johnston, passed away on Sunday, May 5th, 2013 at the age of 92 years.
Thelma leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Laura Johnston (Greg) Kelm of Fairfield, Connecticut; and three grandchildren, Steven Johnston Kelm, Torrey Johnston Kelm, and Lindsay Johnston Cassidy (Taylor). Besides her husband, Arnold, Thelma was predeceased by her parents, John Ambrose and Laura Gertrude Wise; four brothers; and one sister. The family also gratefully acknowledges the loving care given by her long time caregiver, Teresa Aquino. Thelma was born on October 13th, 1920 at Rockyford, Alberta where she was raised and began her education. She completed her schooling in Calgary and met Arnold there while working at Calgary Income Tax Office. Thelma and Arnold were married on June 13th, 1942 in Calgary and lived there until 1952 when they moved to Lethbridge. In 1956, they settled in Medicine Hat where Arnold became a founding member of the accounting firm Johnston Morrison Hunter & Co., now known as JMH & Co. Thelma very much enjoyed her life in Medicine Hat where she was a patron of the arts and active in the Ladies Shrine, Dan McCharles Ladies Auxiliary, and Canadian Save the Children for Alberta, as well as being a gracious hostess. Her hobbies included golfing, travelling, playing bridge, and painting. She also loved to visit her family in Connecticut. Thelma will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. The Private Funeral Service will be held in FIFTH AVENUE MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH, 476 – 4th Street SE, on Saturday, May 25th, 2013 with Reverend Kevin Johnston officiating. A Private Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Thelma’s memory may be made to either the Palliative Care Unit 6 West of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, 666 – 5th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4H6, or to the Esplanade Art Gallery, 401 – 1st Street SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8W2.
