1923—2017

McCune – Cameron Thomas McCune of Brooks AB, beloved husband of the late Joyce McCune, passed away on Mon. June 5, 2017 at the age of 93 years. Cam was born on Oct. 25, 1923, and raised in Empress, AB, to Ed and Luvina McCune. He was the youngest of six children. He was raised in a family of love, music, closeness to extended family and community spirit. His father, started a dance orchestra, The Albertans, that played all over the area including Medicine Hat, AB. Each child played in the orchestra when they became of age. Cam started off on drums and graduated to trumpet. When he was 14, Joyce Plowman moved to town and they became a couple and married on Aug. 6, 1944 in Drumhellar, AB. Due to the onset of World War ll, Cam enlisted in the Canadian Military in the fall of 1941 and in Jan 1943 he enlisted in the 33 Co. Canadian Dental Corps at Calgary AB. He was honourably discharged Dec. 20 1945. In Jan of 1946, he and his wife and 1st child moved to Edmonton, where he went to the University of Alberta to obtain his DDS degree. They moved to Brooks in May of 1950, with two children, to establish his dental practice. In the following years six more children were born. Cam retired at age 65. He became involved in the Brooks Band which became the EID Band where he established a reputation with the Legion by playing at almost all of their Remembrance Day ceremonies even after retiring from the band. Cam loved to play golf, curl, have jam sessions with his family and siblings, played several instruments and took his large family on yearly vacations. He was a member of the K-40s, School Board, Brooks United Church, Brooks Golf Club, Jay-Cees and Brooks Elks Club. Cam was predeceased by his beloved wife Joyce, parents Ed and Luvina McCune, all five of his siblings and their partners and three nephews. He is survived by his eight children: Kit (Mel Spence), Judy (Jim Webber), Marilyn McCune, Kelley McCune, Ed McCune( Toni Musqua), Dorrie(Doug McLeod), Melanie McCune and Amy McCune, plus seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also, several nieces and nephews, and grandchildren and great grandchildren-in–law and one unofficial grandchild. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 22nd at 11:00 AM from the Brooks United Church. Rev. Esther Baerends officiating.
