AGNES FLORENCE WILEY
Posted: January 3rd, 2020July 1, 1932 – December 31, 2019
Agnes died peacefully at home in Edmonton, as she wished, surrounded by her family. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 64 years, Lorne, in 2017, her daughter Kathy (Tim McCashin) in 1994 and sisters Irma Hardy, Amanda MacDonald and Eleanor Mudry. She is survived by her son Keith, daughter Jane (Jason Foster), adopted daughter Michele Kelly (Carolyn Grogan), daughter-in-law Jakalin MacGregor, brother Edmund Keck and grandchildren Kate McCashin, Amanda Ladner (Brendan), Morghain Gibbons (Josh Shook), Clair McCashin, Andrew MacGregor, Neale Wiley, Faith Wiley (Ned Zimmerman), Linden Gibbons, Camille Wiley, Gillian Wiley and many nieces and nephews.
Agnes was born in Medicine Hat and raised on the Keck homestead near Hilda. She attended high school in Maple Creek and Teachers’ College in Calgary, where she met Lorne. Agnes inspired her family and many others with her fierce activism for social justice and the environment. She was a central organizer and executive member of the Medicine Hat NDP, Friends of Medicare, the Raging Grannies, square dance associations and the Medicine Hat Co-op. She was an avid bridge player and a prominent Alberta square dance caller.
After Lorne died, Agnes moved to Edmonton to be closer to family, although she greatly missed her Medicine Hat family and friends.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff and Dr. Harkirat Sidhu at Rosedale Estates and for their care in her last years.
A memorial will be held at the Westwood Unitarian Church, 11135 – 65 Avenue, Edmonton, on Saturday, January 4 at 3:00 pm. www.serenity.ca
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta NDP or the David Suzuki Foundation.
So sorry for your loss.
