Joseph Andrew Yuhas, beloved husband of Marylyn Julia Yuhas, passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat on Friday, June 25, 2021, at the age of 87 years. Joe will forever be remembered and cherished by his loving wife of 67 years, Marylyn, his children: Glyn Yuhas (Darlene), Gary Yuhas and Marylynn Yuhas (Perry Sansregret); grandchildren, Robert Yuhas, Jessilyn Forigo (Dan Forigo), Jennafer Yuhas, Justin Yuhas as well as his great-granddaughters, Peighton and Kyleigh. Also left to cherish Joe’s memory are numerous sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces; nephews and special chosen family, Cory Waters (Lisa Weiss). Joe was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Yuhas; his youngest son, Robert John Yuhas; eldest brother, John Yuhas; sister, Anne Thorne and youngest brother, George Yuhas. Joe was born on January 17, 1934, in Barnwell, Alberta. Coming from a farming community, he learned the value of hard work at a young age and was eager to pave his own way, leaving home at the age of 17. Joe fell in love with Marylyn in 1953 and they were married shortly thereafter. Together they raised their four children, always making family a priority. Many memories were made at their Dominion Street home where their door was always open to welcome family or friends. Joe tried his hand at many jobs before finding his passion with the Canadian Pacific Railway. As a young man, Joe was intrigued by watching trains and this led to him joining C.P. Rail where he worked for nearly 37 years. He made many lasting friendships and had many great mentors on the railroad. Joe had countless stories to share about his days ‘riding the rails’ and these memories were held close to his heart. He was very proud of achieving #1 position of seniority as a conductor on Via Rail. Joe was active in Medicine Hat as a member of the Legion, Elks and the Moose. He had a role in establishing and then running the Moose fastball tournament for years and coached the Lionettes and Wren’s ladies fastball teams as well as the Moose Lark’s men’s fastball team. He was also involved with the CPR curling club, and ran the CPR pensioners banquet for 10 years. Joe spent two years on the city recreation board and at one point was approached to run for alderman, which he humbly declined. He dedicated much of his life to serving his community. Joe and Marylyn enjoyed travelling. They spent nine years wintering in Yuma, had many Montana camping trips and had the opportunity to vacation in Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Mexico with Joe’s favourite trip being to Atlantic Canada. Joe was a social butterfly and he valued the relationships he made with people. He spoke his mind and he called a spade a spade. Joe was a fun and adventurous man and a loving husband and father. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they were his pride and joy. His family is what he lived for and he only wanted the best for them. Joe was so grateful for the exceptional care he received at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and the family extends a special thanks as well. A Celebration of Joe’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, July 2, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.
