1928-2022

lt is with great sadness and much love, the family of Katherine Steier (nee Helfrich) announce her passing on September 26, 2022, at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Paul, in 2009. She was also predeceased by parents Frank and Catherine (Ashenbrenner) Helfrich; five siblings Mary, Joseph, Jake, Anne, and Elizabeth.

Katherine leaves to cherish her memory two children June (Jerry) Gizen and Lloyd (Marilyn) Steier; five grandchildren Jason Gizen, Jeremy (Trisha) Gizen, Janelle (Brad) Moch; Paul Steier, Adam (Amber) Steier; ten great-grandchildren, Roman, Volodja & Andreanna Gizen, Grace, Mae & Benjamin Gizen, Cade & Lucy Moch, and Esme Steier; two step great- grandchildren Bo (Kristen) Morgan & Cole (Donna) Morgan & children Aurora, Bayne, Ember. She will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews.

Katherine was born on June 14, 1928, in Prelate Saskatchewan where she resided happily for most of her life, later living in Leader at both the Chinook courts and Western Seniors home. In addition to raising a family and maintaining a household she worked full time for over 40 years–mostly in healthcare–first at the Prelate Hospital then at Leader Union Hospital when Prelate closed. She would often work a full day shift at times such as Christmas and somehow still manage to prepare amazing holiday dinners for family and friends. She often recounted stories of her early years working in Prelate, when often she was the only one on duty for the evening or night shift, she dealt with many facets of healthcare. She took much satisfaction in being a caregiver and her greatest joys were helping with the birth of babies and taking care of children. She treasured her grandchildren and loved every moment spent with them.

The family is especially appreciative of the “culture of caring” that exists in the communities of Prelate and Leader– particularly the Seniors home.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations in Katherine’s name to either the Western Senior Citizens Home, Leader Sk., S0N 1H0; or Diabetes Canada (on-line or to the Regina Office 919B Albert St. S4R 2P6).

A Celebration of Katherine’s Life will be held on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Little Flower Catholic Church, 308 Main St. West, Leader, SK, with Father Prince officiating. The service may also be viewed on-line through the Little Flower Church Facebook page. A private burial will follow later at the Prelate Cemetery.
