Leone Christine McGregor passed away peacefully at the Care West Garrison Green Nursing Home, in Calgary, AB., on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. She was 91 years old at the time of passing, just one day past her birthday. Leone was born on January 16, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan to parents, Lloyd and Violet McGregor. At the age of 18, Leone was a member of the Civil Light Opera Singers and Dancers in Detroit. Drama was a passion of hers and she received accolades for her “most exciting stage personality” as quoted from one of her drama teachers. She graduated with High Honours from the Medicine Hat College in 1972, with an Associate Diploma – studies in Arts. Leone remained involved by directing, writing plays and received several thank you cards from her students which were found in her treasured papers. Leone further pursued a degree in Psychology and worked as a Psychologist. In 1963, Leone married Richard Mells and divorced in 1968. Step-sons Michael and Warrick Mells were important to Leone and she continued relationships with them, particularly Warrick and his family. Her personality was big and bold and she had a quick wit with a great sense of humour. Leone loved dogs and had several over the course of her life. She was an avid reader and was interested in world events, politics and psychology. At the same time, Leone loved to draw and paint pictures of people of various backgrounds, eras and situations. She loved collecting art and decorating her home. In her later years, Leone enjoyed going out for dinner, going to lunchbox theatre, shopping and playing cards. Leone is survived by her step-son, Warrick Mells (Kay) of Calgary; cousins, Anne Czajkowski of Florida, Shirley Wasko (John) of Eastend, SK., Linda Wiebe (Ken) of Calgary, Dorothy Wasko of Eastend, SK., Doug McGregor (Karen) of Bow Island, B.C., as well as other numerous cousins. Leone was predeceased by her father and mother, Lloyd and Violet McGregor; Aunt Beatrice Torkelson (Harold (Tag); Uncle Ronald McCann (Edith); Uncle Harold McCann; Uncle Everett McCann; Aunt Lavina McCann; Uncle Max McGregor (Irene); Aunt Irene Taylor (Montford); cousins, Dolores Pahl (Vernon), Gail Wright (Gary), Richard McGregor, Dorothy Armstrong (Donald) and step-son, Michael Mells. A time of visitation will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, January 21, 2023, between 2:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. A Graveside Celebration of Leone’s life will follow at the family plot in Hillside Cemetery at 3:30 p.m., with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz offciating. Those wishing to attend the Graveside Service are asked to gather at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel no later than 3:15 p.m. to join the procession to graveside.
