1950 ~ DENNIS COURCHAINE ~ 2023 Dennis Peter Courchaine passed away at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice on February 20, 2023 at the age of 72 years. He is survived by his beloved son, Kevin (Melissa) Holliday of Cochenour, ON; his brother, Hector (Nancy) of Kenora, ON; sister, Carol (Scott) Bailey of Thunder Bay, ON; as well as his best friend, Lou Haag, who was with him through the last of his journey. He will also be remembered by Bonnie and David, the children of his second wife; and several cousins and nieces and nephews. Dennis was also a grandfather and great grandfather. He was predeceased by his father, Peter (February 1995), and his mother, Bertha (Novemeber 2008). Dennis was born in Cocchnour, ON on June 18, 1950 and raised in Balmertown, ON, both in the Red Lake area. He became Dennis the menace at an early age! He didn’t need to look for mischief, it found him! When he was in about grade 10, he moved with his parents to Saskatoon, SK; he attended the university there. During summer break, he went back to Ontario to work at Griffith Iron Ore Mine. He was married and welcomed son, Kevin, May 6, 1975. Later, he remarried and raised Bonnie and David. He worked at David Bell gold mine. He was divorced a second time. When his father became ill, he came to Medicine Hat to help care for him. He worked as a security guard on 5N at MHRH. After his dad passed, he stayed to help and care for his mother; he retired in 2015. Dennis was an avid bowler his entire life until he was bothered with a bad back. Then he would go to the lanes just to watch the old farts try to throw the ball down the lane.
Dennis had a great sense of humour and was very compassionate. He also loved totally when he gave his love to someone. He excelled in school to the point where he was bored a lot of the time as it didn’t challenge him enough. He was involved with the Paralympics in the bowling sector and loved the people he taught and worked with. He was generous with his time taking relatives to appointments, the bank, or shopping; the Frey family just loved him. He put the welfare of others before his own. He was a low-key person, reluctant to draw attention to himself. Dennis loved to watch sports on television! He watched two televisions simultaneously of two different games, that was the Gemini in him. His greatest satisfaction was making people laugh! He would often say, “if he could make at least one person laugh in the day, his day was a success.” He loved to tease, especially his fellow bowlers. A message from Dennis is to enjoy life to the fullest! Don’t let a head pin “strike” you out. Dennis was a good and wonderful man. His family and close friends loved him dearly and he will be sadly missed! Dennis has been cremated. As per his request, there will be no funeral service. Donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice. Thank you to all Doctors, nurses, and the staff at St. Joseph’s hospice along his final journey.
