STASIA ALLAHVERDOVA
Posted: August 5th, 2023 STASIA ALLAHVERDOVA April 12, 1942 ~ August 3, 2023
Stasia Allahverdova passed away unexpectedly at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the age of 81 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her only daughter, Teresa and grandsons, Kyamran and Mehdi (Moscow, Russia). She was predeceased by her husband Vladimir and her parents. Stasia was born in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan Republic, former Soviet Union. Baku had been her home for many years. She had grown up in the big city with multinational culture, great history of many centuries, warm climate and the wonderful food and hospitality. That all changed in the early 1990’s due to the politically unstable situation in Baku and suppresion of the Armenian nationality Stasia belonged to. She had to leave everything she had in one day and fled across the Caspian Sea to Turkmenistan Deserts to save her life. All she had was a home gown, slippers and her passport at the time. Stasia spent several years in Turkmenistan until she was evacuated by Red Cross to Canada in 2006. By that time she suffered losing all contact to her only daughter and grandsons who stayed in Baku, which were her only family she had left. In Canada, Stasia’s life started almost from zero again. She felt real safe and found a lot of new friends. She liked cooking (she was a good cook!), caring for people, keeping things organized, exercizing and joking. Living in Veneer Home Society brought her new, good, warm friends and Stasia found a new activity – she became a table tennis champion of Medicine Hat (in her age range) and participated in tournaments throughout Alberta. Stasia had an exceptional memory as she remembered phone numbers and birthdays of her friends and neigbours by heart. She also liked doing word puzzles and was a good listener as well. Stasia was a good angel of any good friends’ feast whether it was cooking, arranging or making sure everybody was comfortable and happy as nobody could leave her home without being fed! For many years Stasia kept hope to find her lost daughter and grandsons. She applied to Red Cross and some TV shows from former Soviet Union but all was for fail. She had absolutely no news or idea what happened to them. In 2009, her friends helped in a deep internet search and her family was found as evacuees living safely in Russia. It was a spark in her life, a happy reunion with her only child after 15 years of torture, not knowing what happened to Teresa and her sons. Stasia had several trips to her daughters’ family and kept them as a focus and joy in her soul in recent years. In honour of Stasia’s life, those wishing to pay their respects may do at Cook Southland Funeral Chape, 901 -1 3 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Sunday, August 6, 2023, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Dignified cremation will follow. We are saddened to hear of Stasia’s passing. She was a wonderful, thoughtful regular customer and friend. She spoiled us regularly with gifts of chocolate, especially on International Women’s Day. She always spoke of her daughter and shared her excitement of reconnecting with them. Our thoughts and sympathies to her family and friends.
